Most performers, especially if given plenty of calm support beforehand, learn to cope. Accepting signs of heightened preparation for the activity to come is half the battle and using the extra adrenalin to good purpose is the next step.

Parents, teachers and candidates should remember that these feelings are entirely normal.
#ABRSM ACCOMPANIST PROFESSIONAL#
Shaking fingers, butterflies in the stomach and general agitation are all old friends to professional musicians! Newcomers to performing may find these perfectly natural symptoms distressing and need help in coping with them. We ask that candidates return to the waiting room in good time for the exam. This time is best used as a brief chance to warm up aloud – not for last minute practice!

Sometimes the room will have a piano and the steward will indicate the length of time available to each candidate. “Thank you for your lovely accompanying and your warm presence.” Student at Chichester University.Where there is a warm-up room, candidates will have a brief chance to warm up aloud. “Thanks for being there when I needed you most (usually a week before a concert!) Your dedication and encouragement cannot be measured, and I think for all the pupils at CYM you work will be forever treasured.” Stella – student at Centre for Young Musicians. Understanding more about the composers adds a great perspective to performances and her lectures and University work means she has a huge amount of knowledge to impart as regards music history……and if you get the chance, go and see her perform!!” Laurence – violinist Angela’s help with researching and writing the programme notes for the diploma was also absolutely invaluable to me. Her sight reading is also amazing, so she is great for working through repertoire at any stage of the process. She is very generous in terms of her musical knowledge and interpretations and during rehearsal she helped me a lot with the development of the performance for these events. Angela is extremely supportive as an accompanist, a strong and nuanced player who will also push me along when I need it. She also did the rehearsal and accompaniment for my ABRSM Diploma. We have played at the Portsmouth Music Festival Competition twice (adult string section). “I have played with Angela on a number of occasions. If you or your child require an accompanist for an examination or other event, please contact Angela in the first instance with the date, time and venue, after which she will be happy to arrange accompaniment sessions at her home in Horndean, Hampshire. She recommends arranging an accompaniment session in the early stages of learning a piece so that the student can get a ‘feel’ for the piece with its accompaniment, aiding their ongoing learning of it. She has accompanied all stringed, brass and woodwind instruments and singers.Īngela regularly prepares amateurs and children for ABRSM and Trinity College London examinations from Grade 1 to Grade 8 and beyond to Diploma level as accompanist, aiming to collaborate with the ideas and aims of the students’ regular teachers. Her aim is to build confidence and an all-round knowledge of the music in the instrumentalists and singers she accompanies, teaching them to listen to their own parts and the piano part as a whole and to understand the context of the music. Angela has been providing piano accompaniment for amateur musicians and children for concerts, festivals and examinations for over 30 years, starting at the Purcell School where she was a student, and continuing at The Centre for Young Musicians in London and at the University of Chichester Junior Department.
